Lauren Colfer talks about Star in a Bra

This week Bra Selector caught up with the one and only Lauren Colfer, winner of the Brastop Star in a Bra 2009 competition to find out more about what it takes to be crowned the top curvy lingerie model and what it’s like getting involved.

Hi Lauren and welcome to Bra Selector. What made you want to enter?

I wanted to enter the previous year, but was discouraged by my dad. But when the second year came around, I knew I really wanted to give it a go. Luckily my dad was really cool with it all too!

Was modelling something you had previously considered?

There has always been a part of me that wanted to give modelling a go, but I never thought I could do it with my curves. I’ve never been camera shy and modelling always looked like a fun AND glamorous lifestyle, though I have found out that it is definitely hard work… but the most fun hard work!

How did you find out about the competition?

I was a Brastop customer for quite a few years and saw the reminder for the new competition in an email newsletter from them.

How does it feel being scantily clad all in front of so many people in The Sun, local newspapers? Did it take some getting used to
- were you embarrassed and how much getting used to does it take?

At first I was thinking “Oh my gosh, what am I getting myself into” but it wasn’t really long before it stopped being alien to me. People have been so positive about it, I didn’t feel embarrassed at all. At the beginning of any shoot, I might feel a bit tense, but you start warming up, having fun and I did really get into it.

What’s it like being in photo-shoots?

Fun!! It’s challenging too, because you’re acting, trying to portray a certain action (like attractively eating a cupcake… tricky!) and look like you’re having a wonderful time in your underwear… but we genuinely laugh so much on shoots.

What is your favourite shoot so far and why?

My favourite shoot was definitely the Autumn/Winter 2010 for Curvy Kate, where we did the tea party theme and not just because we got to eat the cakes! The hotel was gorgeous and I just thought the theme worked really well.

Yes – curvy girls really can have their cake and eat it. Lauren enjoys a cupcake with fellow star in their bras.

You’re a sweet girl and very pretty. Did you get lots of fan mail, lots of cute blokes chasing you?

Thank you! I did get a lot of messages on Facebook, but mainly just messages saying well done and that they voted for me. People left really nice messages, but no one really chasing me, I don’t think, unless I am just oblivious to it!

Other than the fame (!) – what has it meant to you?

Haha I don’t know about fame!! It was just fantastic, big highlight of my life so far. I’m so glad I went for it. It gave me a real taste for modelling too and I’ve met some brilliant people through Curvy Kate and Brastop that I won’t forget.

What are you doing now? Are you still modelling for Curvy Kate, has it led to new opportunities for you and do you feel that
professional lingerie modelling is a future career?

I’m currently at University studying psychology. The new competition means the new winner will be fronting for Curvy Kate, but as for me, I will be definitely trying to get a modelling agency to represent me very soon. I know I’m definitely comfortable modelling lingerie, and I would love to model as a career, that would be amazing, though I know it’s tough competition out there. But I gave it a go once, I’ll definitely give it another go.

What advice would you give this year’s entrants?

Don’t worry about what anyone else will think, there is nothing more positive than embracing how you naturally look and being proud of your curves. Make sure you tell everyone that you’re involved – the help I got from friends was amazing, I still can’t thank them enough.

What has it been like working with large bra specialist Brastop?

It was great to become a part of something that I was a customer of before!

I’m a big boobed girl myself and I know how difficult it can be to find comfortable and stylish bras. What’s your favourite bra and why?

I have so many bras from so many companies! I’ve always been a fan of Freya, Pananche, Gossard and Wonderbra. I recently bought Wonderbra’s Ultimate strapless and it was one of the best underwear investments I’ve made. In the last year though, Curvy Kate has become a firm favourite, especially the Showgirl range.

Thanks very much for taking part, we appreciate your time and wish you all the best in 2010!

Don’t forget, Bra Selector is offering an exclusive 10% off any lingerie until Sunday night with free delivery assuming you spend over £40.
